Updating Software on a GDL 5X Device

The process for updating the software will vary depending on what device you are using with the GDL 50, 51, or 52.

If you are using the GDL 5X with:

  • A Garmin aviation portable device, the software will be received through the portable device. The software for your portable can be obtained through the WebUpdater program.
  • An iOS or Android mobile device, the software will be received through the Garmin Pilot application. This is a free download and requires a Bluetooth connection between the GDL 5X and the mobile device. Once the GDL 5X is connected via Bluetooth, open Garmin Pilot and touch Home > Connext > GDL 5X. Under Firmware, select "Check for Updates". If there is an update available, you can select it when it prompts you to do so.

Note: The unit will only update when connected to an external power source.
